近红外荧光素可以被用来利用生物组织的近红外窗口。在这个光谱区域，高度增强的组织透明度使得活体成像成为可能。该染料可用于制备CY7标记的生物分子来进行后续试验，如活体研究及**开发相关实验。
Cy7的特殊结构加固了中心聚亚甲基（polymethyne）链的稳定性。这种增强的分子结构会使其量子产率较其母结构提供20%，因此它的荧光强度会更大。 该试剂在标记时需要共溶剂有机溶剂。水溶Cy7 NHS ester可以用于蛋白NIR标记。
